A charming little town nestled in the hills of Lazio less than two hours away from Rome has been taken by storm as tourists visit in droves before it’s too late.

Civita di Bagnoregio, in the Alta Tuscia region of central Italy, stands on the top of a tuff hill that has been slowly crumbling away.

Nicknamed “the dying city” as early as the 1960s, a 2020 study found that the hill loses an average of seven centimetres every year.

The research estimated the available surface around Civita dropped by between 20 and 25% in…
